How should I tell someone I haven't talked to in months that I miss them?

So this guy and I had a slight history last year, but things ended a little roughly and we haven't talked in about 7 or 8 months.. But now I feel like the tension has cooled down and I want to start talking to him again. How should I tell him I miss him?
